Where to start in Mississippi
If you're an adult with a low income or no insurance in Mississippi, try these in order:
- Health centers. Fees on a sliding scale by income, at HRSA-funded centers around Mississippi.
- Dental school clinic. One, in Jackson. Students treat patients for less than a private office.
- Medicaid. For adults, emergency pain relief only.
- 211 and free clinics. Call 211 for local dental programs.
- Hygiene schools. Five accredited programs for low-cost cleanings.
The finder reorders this list for children, seniors, veterans, pregnancy, disability or a dental emergency.
Community health centers in Mississippi
Because Mississippi Medicaid covers only emergencies for adults, health centers are often the most affordable place for routine care. These clinics treat medical and dental problems, adjust fees to income and family size, and can't refuse someone who can't pay (HRSA). At or below the federal poverty guidelines you get the full discount (a small nominal fee is allowed), and partial discounts continue up to twice that income. Not every site has a dental clinic; ask when you call. Nationwide, health centers had 6,965,690 dental patients in 2025 (HRSA).
Search by address with HRSA's Find a Health Center, then ask about dental appointments, the sliding fee and what proof of income to bring.
Mississippi's dental school clinic
Mississippi has one accredited dental school (CODA). Its students treat patients under licensed dentists, for less than a private office charges (ADA MouthHealthy, NIDCR). The catch is time: appointments run long, most schools screen new patients first, and some charge for that screening. This is what each school's patient page said when we checked on October 26, 2026:
- University of Mississippi School of Dentistry, Jackson. Phone: (601) 984-6155 (option 1). UMMC Dentistry says student fees are about half of private-practice fees. Student appointments: (601) 984-6155, option 1. Dental hygiene student appointments (cleanings): (601) 984-6340.
Mississippi Medicaid for adults: emergency dental care only
Mississippi's adult Medicaid dental benefit is rated emergency-only in the ADA Health Policy Institute's state review, which uses data as of August 2025. Medicaid pays only for pain relief in emergencies the state defines. Checkups, cleanings and fillings aren't part of this level.
That rating hasn't changed in any year from 2021 to 2025.
If you have Medicaid, it can still help when you're in pain: ask your plan which emergency dental services it pays for and which dentists take it. For checkups and fillings, use the clinics on this page. To apply, go to HealthCare.gov or contact Mississippi's Medicaid agency.
Low-cost cleanings at Mississippi's five dental hygiene programs
CODA lists five accredited dental hygiene programs in Mississippi. NIDCR says hygiene schools may offer supervised, low-cost care as part of training. They mainly do cleanings and related preventive care, so they suit a checkup and cleaning better than fillings. In Jackson, UMMC books dental hygiene student appointments at (601) 984-6340.
To find them, open the CODA program search, choose Allied Dental Education Programs, then Dental Hygiene and Mississippi, and call each one to ask about patient clinic days.
Pregnancy and disability in Mississippi
CareQuest lists no extra dental benefit for pregnant Medicaid members in Mississippi (coverage as of December 2024), so expect the emergency-only adult level. Medicaid health plans sometimes add extras, so ask yours. The ADA says diagnostic, preventive and restorative dental treatment is safe at every stage of pregnancy, including X-rays and local anesthetic.
Mississippi has no extra disability group on CareQuest's list, so the regular adult level applies. Two other routes: Donated Dental Services, which accepts people who are permanently disabled, and Special Olympics Special Smiles screenings for athletes.
Dental care for children in Mississippi
Whatever Mississippi offers adults, children have the most dependable coverage: Medicaid covers dental care for every enrolled child under 21 (EPSDT), and separate CHIP programs must include dental care too (Medicaid.gov). The income limits may be higher than you expect: up to $80,000 a year or more for a family of four, depending on the state (InsureKidsNow). Once your child is covered, the InsureKidsNow finder lists dentists in Mississippi who accept Medicaid and CHIP; for help applying, call 1-877-543-7669.
For free children's care days, look for Give Kids A Smile events, or call 1-844-490-4527 (ADA MouthHealthy).
Free dental clinic events
The Mission of Mercy calendar had no Mississippi date on October 26, 2026; these volunteer clinics move from town to town.
Remote Area Medical (RAM) holds free pop-up clinics with dental, vision and medical care at no cost; no insurance is needed and it's first come, first served.
Donated Dental Services in Mississippi: intake closed for now
Volunteer dentists in Dental Lifeline Network's program treat people who are 65 or older, permanently disabled, or need medically necessary dental care, at no cost to them. Cosmetic care isn't included. Expect a long wait (several months to a year or more), and use up any insurance or Medicaid dental benefits first; each person can get care through it only once.
Closed to new applications in Mississippi for now. That's from the application form on October 26, 2026, and it changes often. Check Dental Lifeline Network again later; meanwhile, use the other options on this page.
Seniors and veterans in Mississippi
Original Medicare usually doesn't cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, extractions or dentures (Medicare.gov). KFF found that 98% of individual Medicare Advantage plans offer some dental coverage in 2026, but some cover only preventive care and many cap what they pay each year. PACE, for people 55 and older who need a nursing-home level of care but live at home, covers dentistry. In Mississippi, seniors who also have Medicaid get the adult benefit (emergency-only).
For veterans, free VA dental care depends on your eligibility class; the widest coverage goes to former POWs and veterans with a compensated service-connected dental condition or a 100% service-connected rating. Others can buy insurance through VADIP.
VA dental care lists every eligibility class.
Other help in Mississippi
211 (211.org) keeps current lists of local help around the clock. The NAFC clinic finder covers free and charitable clinics for people without insurance; ask each one about dental care.
