Where to start in Maine
If you're an adult with a low income or no insurance in Maine, try these in order:
- Medicaid. Adults get a broad dental benefit (extensive), one that also passes CareQuest's stricter test. Apply if your income is low.
- Health centers. Fees on a sliding scale by income, at HRSA-funded centers around Maine.
- Dental school clinic. One, in Portland. Students treat patients for less than a private office.
- 211 and free clinics. Call 211 for local dental programs.
- Hygiene schools. Two accredited programs for low-cost cleanings.
The finder reorders this list for children, seniors, veterans, pregnancy, disability or a dental emergency.
How Maine expanded adult Medicaid dental care
Maine's adult Medicaid dental benefit is rated extensive in the ADA Health Policy Institute's state review, which uses data as of August 2025. Medicaid pays for a broad mix of care, at least checkups, cleanings and fillings, with a yearly limit of $1,000 or more, or no limit. The ADA Health Policy Institute calls this level "Enhanced".
Coverage here has moved over the last five years: emergency-only (2021), then extensive (2022–2025).
| Year | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maine adult level | Emergency only | Extensive | Extensive | Extensive | Extensive |
A dated change we confirmed:
- 2025–2026: Reimbursement rates increased. (CareQuest Institute)
Maine is also one of only 11 states plus DC that met CareQuest Institute's stricter definition of "extensive" adult coverage at the end of 2024.
Because the benefit is newer, ask your plan for a list of dentists who take it; the member number is on your card. Not enrolled? Apply through HealthCare.gov or Maine's Medicaid agency.
Sliding-fee dental care at Maine health centers
If you're waiting for Medicaid approval, or earn a little too much to qualify, a health center can bridge the gap. HRSA-funded centers charge on a sliding scale based on household income and size, and nobody can be turned away for being unable to pay. At or below the federal poverty guidelines you get the full discount (a small nominal fee is allowed), and partial discounts continue up to twice that income. Not every site has a dental clinic; ask when you call. Nationwide, health centers had 6,965,690 dental patients in 2025 (HRSA).
Search by address with HRSA's Find a Health Center, then ask about dental appointments, the sliding fee and what proof of income to bring.
Maine's dental school clinic
Maine has one accredited dental school (CODA). Its students treat patients under licensed dentists, for less than a private office charges (ADA MouthHealthy, NIDCR). The catch is time: appointments run long, most schools screen new patients first, and some charge for that screening. This is what each school's patient page said when we checked on October 26, 2026:
- University of New England College of Dental Medicine, Portland. Phone: (207) 221-4747. Oral Health Center in Portland, with fees generally 30–50% lower than private practices. New-patient slots are limited each semester, and it doesn't take single-procedure referrals.
Pregnancy and disability in Maine
Pregnant members get Maine's regular adult Medicaid dental benefit (extensive). CareQuest lists no extra pregnancy-only services here (coverage as of December 2024). Don't put off care: the ADA says preventive and restorative treatment and X-rays are safe throughout pregnancy, and so is emergency treatment.
Maine has no extra disability group on CareQuest's list, so the regular adult level applies. Two other routes: Donated Dental Services, which accepts people who are permanently disabled, and Special Olympics Special Smiles screenings for athletes.
Dental hygiene schools in Maine (two on CODA's list)
CODA lists two accredited dental hygiene programs in Maine. Hygiene students need patients to practice on, and NIDCR notes their schools may offer low-cost, supervised care. They mainly do cleanings and related preventive care, so they suit a checkup and cleaning better than fillings.
To find them, open the CODA program search, choose Allied Dental Education Programs, then Dental Hygiene and Maine, and call each one to ask about patient clinic days.
Kids' dental coverage in Maine
Kids under 21 on Medicaid get dental care through EPSDT, and CHIP plans must cover dental care as well (Medicaid.gov). Families earning more than you might think can qualify; InsureKidsNow gives up to $80,000 a year or more for a family of four, varying by state. Once your child is covered, the InsureKidsNow finder lists dentists in Maine who accept Medicaid and CHIP; for help applying, call 1-877-543-7669.
For free children's care days, look for Give Kids A Smile events, or call 1-844-490-4527 (ADA MouthHealthy).
Donated Dental Services in Maine: intake open in some areas
This charity program, run by Dental Lifeline Network, gives free comprehensive treatment through volunteer dentists to people who are 65 or older, permanently disabled or need medically necessary care, and who can't pay. You must use up any dental insurance or Medicaid benefits first, you can use the program only once, and the waitlist can run from several months to a year or more.
Partly open in Maine. Only accepting: Androscoggin, Cumberland, Knox, Oxford, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, Somerset, Waldo, York counties. That's from the application form on October 26, 2026, and it changes often. Apply online at Dental Lifeline Network.
Free dental clinic events
The Mission of Mercy calendar had no Maine date on October 26, 2026; these volunteer clinics move from town to town.
Remote Area Medical (RAM) holds free pop-up clinics with dental, vision and medical care at no cost; no insurance is needed and it's first come, first served.
Seniors and veterans in Maine
Original Medicare usually doesn't cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, extractions or dentures (Medicare.gov). KFF found that 98% of individual Medicare Advantage plans offer some dental coverage in 2026, but some cover only preventive care and many cap what they pay each year. PACE, for people 55 and older who need a nursing-home level of care but live at home, covers dentistry. In Maine, seniors who also have Medicaid get the adult benefit (extensive).
For veterans, free VA dental care depends on your eligibility class; the widest coverage goes to former POWs and veterans with a compensated service-connected dental condition or a 100% service-connected rating. Others can buy insurance through VADIP.
VA dental care lists every eligibility class.
Other help in Maine
Call 211, or search 211.org by ZIP code; it's free, confidential and open 24/7. Free and charitable clinics (NAFC) and your local health department may also know of reduced-cost dental care (NIDCR).
If you'll pay part of the bill yourself, compare a savings plan with insurance using Savings Plan vs Insurance (a discount plan doesn't pay dental expenses for you, per ADA MouthHealthy), and check financing offers with the Dental Payment Calculator.
