Where to start in Louisiana
For an uninsured or low-income adult in Louisiana, the usual order is:
- Medicaid. Adults get limited dental coverage, with a yearly cap of $1,000 or less.
- Health centers. Fees on a sliding scale by income, at HRSA-funded centers around Louisiana.
- Dental school clinic. One, in New Orleans. Students treat patients for less than a private office.
- 211 and free clinics. Call 211 for local dental programs.
- Hygiene schools. Three accredited programs for low-cost cleanings.
The finder reorders this list for children, seniors, veterans, pregnancy, disability or a dental emergency.
What Louisiana Medicaid covers for adult teeth
Louisiana's adult Medicaid dental benefit is rated limited in the ADA Health Policy Institute's state review, which uses data as of August 2025. Medicaid pays for some checkups, cleanings and simple fillings, up to $1,000 or less per person each year.
Louisiana's level has stayed the same every year since 2021.
If you're enrolled, ask your plan which checkups, cleanings and fillings it pays for and how much of the yearly limit is left before you book bigger work. To apply, use HealthCare.gov, which also links to Louisiana's Medicaid agency.
Louisiana's dental school clinic
Louisiana has one accredited dental school (CODA). Its students treat patients under licensed dentists, for less than a private office charges (ADA MouthHealthy, NIDCR). Expect longer visits, a screening appointment first (sometimes paid) and no promise you'll be accepted. This is what each school's patient page said when we checked on October 26, 2026:
- Louisiana State University Health Science Center - New Orleans, New Orleans. Phone: (504) 619-8770. Student clinic fees are well below private care, but care isn't free. Screening line, weekdays 8:00–4:30: (504) 619-8700. LSU also has a Baton Rouge clinic.
Sliding-fee dental care at Louisiana health centers
When Louisiana's limited Medicaid benefit runs out for the year, or you aren't enrolled, a health center's sliding fee is the fallback. Health centers set fees by income and family size, and they must serve everyone, even people who can't pay (HRSA). At or below the federal poverty guidelines you get the full discount (a small nominal fee is allowed), and partial discounts continue up to twice that income. Some centers refer patients out for dental care instead of having a dentist on site, so call before you go.
Search by address with HRSA's Find a Health Center, then ask about dental appointments, the sliding fee and what proof of income to bring.
Pregnancy, disability and other groups in Louisiana
Pregnant members get Louisiana's regular adult Medicaid dental benefit (limited). CareQuest lists no extra pregnancy-only services here (coverage as of December 2024). Dental care itself is safe while you're pregnant: the ADA says checkups, X-rays and fillings are fine at any stage, and numbing medicine can be used.
For other groups, CareQuest lists this in Louisiana (coverage as of December 2024): Adults with I/DD enrolled in the New Opportunities, Residential Options or Supports waivers get extra services. If you get Medicaid through a waiver program, ask your case manager which dental services it adds.
Dental hygiene schools in Louisiana (three on CODA's list)
CODA lists three accredited dental hygiene programs in Louisiana. NIDCR says hygiene schools may offer supervised, low-cost care as part of training. Think of them for routine cleanings; not every program runs a public clinic, and visits take longer.
To find them, open the CODA program search, choose Allied Dental Education Programs, then Dental Hygiene and Louisiana, and call each one to ask about patient clinic days.
Donated Dental Services in Louisiana: intake open in some areas
Dental Lifeline Network's Donated Dental Services matches people who can't afford care with volunteer dentists and labs, who give comprehensive treatment at no cost (no cosmetic work). You must be 65 or older, permanently disabled, or need medically necessary dental care. It's a once-only service, other dental benefits (including Medicaid) must be used first, and waits of several months to a year or more are common.
Partly open in Louisiana. Only accepting: Bossier, Caddo, East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, St. Bernard, St. James, St. Martin, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, West Baton Rouge parishes. That's from the application form on October 26, 2026, and it changes often. Apply online at Dental Lifeline Network.
Kids' dental coverage in Louisiana
Whatever Louisiana offers adults, children have the most dependable coverage: Medicaid covers dental care for every enrolled child under 21 (EPSDT), and separate CHIP programs must include dental care too (Medicaid.gov). Families earning more than you might think can qualify; InsureKidsNow gives up to $80,000 a year or more for a family of four, varying by state. Apply through HealthCare.gov or call 1-877-KIDS-NOW (1-877-543-7669), then use the InsureKidsNow dentist finder to find a dentist in Louisiana who takes your child's plan.
Give Kids A Smile events offer free care for children; ADA MouthHealthy's line for finding one is 1-844-490-4527.
Seniors and veterans in Louisiana
Medicare leaves most routine dental care out: in most cases no cleanings, fillings, extractions or dentures (Medicare.gov). Most Medicare Advantage plans add a dental benefit (98% of individual plans in 2026, per KFF), so compare each plan's dental cap, not just its premium. People 55 and older who qualify for PACE get dentistry as part of the program. In Louisiana, seniors who also have Medicaid get the adult benefit (limited).
VA dental care is free only for some veterans, such as those with a compensated service-connected dental condition, former prisoners of war and those with service-connected disabilities rated 100%. Veterans enrolled in VA health care can also buy dental insurance through VADIP, paying the full premium.
VA dental care lists every eligibility class.

Still stuck? More options in Louisiana
Call 211, or search 211.org by ZIP code; it's free, confidential and open 24/7. Free and charitable clinics (NAFC) and your local health department may also know of reduced-cost dental care (NIDCR).
If you'll pay part of the bill yourself, compare a savings plan with insurance using Savings Plan vs Insurance (a discount plan doesn't pay dental expenses for you, per ADA MouthHealthy), and check financing offers with the Dental Payment Calculator.
