Where to start in Indiana
For an uninsured or low-income adult in Indiana, the usual order is:
- Medicaid. Adults get a broad dental benefit (extensive). Apply if your income is low.
- Health centers. Fees on a sliding scale by income, at HRSA-funded centers around Indiana.
- Dental school clinic. One, in Indianapolis. Students treat patients for less than a private office.
- 211 and free clinics. Call 211 for local dental programs.
- Hygiene schools. Eight accredited programs for low-cost cleanings.
The finder reorders this list for children, seniors, veterans, pregnancy, disability or a dental emergency.
How Indiana expanded adult Medicaid dental care
The ADA Health Policy Institute rates adult Medicaid dental benefits in every state. In its latest review (data as of August 2025, published December 2025), Indiana is at the extensive level. Medicaid pays for a broad mix of care, at least checkups, cleanings and fillings, with a yearly limit of $1,000 or more, or no limit. The ADA Health Policy Institute calls this level "Enhanced".
Coverage here has moved over the last five years: limited (2021–2024), then extensive (2025).
| Year | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana adult level | Limited | Limited | Limited | Limited | Extensive |
ADA HPI named Indiana as one of seven states that expanded adult dental benefits in its 2025 review.
Because the benefit is newer, ask your plan for a list of dentists who take it; the member number is on your card. Not enrolled? Apply through HealthCare.gov or Indiana's Medicaid agency.
Sliding-fee dental care at Indiana health centers
If you're waiting for Medicaid approval, or earn a little too much to qualify, a health center can bridge the gap. Health centers set fees by income and family size, and they must serve everyone, even people who can't pay (HRSA). The biggest discount, down to a nominal fee, is for incomes at or below the poverty guidelines, with smaller discounts up to twice that level. Preventive dental care is a required service, but a center can provide it by referral, so ask whether the site near you has its own dentist.
Search by address with HRSA's Find a Health Center, then ask about dental appointments, the sliding fee and what proof of income to bring.
Indiana's dental school clinic
Indiana has one accredited dental school (CODA). Its students treat patients under licensed dentists, for less than a private office charges (ADA MouthHealthy, NIDCR). Expect longer visits, a screening appointment first (sometimes paid) and no promise you'll be accepted. This is what each school's patient page said when we checked on October 26, 2026:
- Indiana University School of Dentistry, Indianapolis. Phone: 317-274-7433. Fees are much lower than at a private practice. The screening exam costs $110–$160. Accepts Medicaid. Takes Medicaid.
Pregnancy, disability and other groups in Indiana
Pregnant members get Indiana's regular adult Medicaid dental benefit (extensive). CareQuest lists no extra pregnancy-only services here (coverage as of December 2024). The ADA says diagnostic, preventive and restorative dental treatment is safe at every stage of pregnancy, including X-rays and local anesthetic.
For other groups, CareQuest lists this in Indiana (coverage as of December 2024): Adults in long-term care get extra or more frequent services.
CareQuest lists no extra dental benefit for people with disabilities in Indiana. Donated Dental Services (below) accepts people who are permanently disabled, and Special Olympics athletes can get free dental screenings at Healthy Athletes events (screening and referral only).
Cleanings from dental hygiene students in Indiana
CODA lists eight accredited dental hygiene programs in Indiana. NIDCR says hygiene schools may offer supervised, low-cost care as part of training. Ask about cleanings and checkups. Clinic days follow the school calendar, and not every program sees the public.
To find them, open the CODA program search, choose Allied Dental Education Programs, then Dental Hygiene and Indiana, and call each one to ask about patient clinic days.
Children and teens in Indiana: Medicaid and CHIP
Children's dental care is a required Medicaid benefit up to age 21, and CHIP covers it too (Medicaid.gov). Children in a family of four earning up to $80,000 a year or more may qualify, depending on the state (InsureKidsNow). Apply through HealthCare.gov or call 1-877-KIDS-NOW (1-877-543-7669), then use the InsureKidsNow dentist finder to find a dentist in Indiana who takes your child's plan.
Give Kids A Smile events offer free care for children; ADA MouthHealthy's line for finding one is 1-844-490-4527.
Donated Dental Services in Indiana: intake open in some areas
This charity program, run by Dental Lifeline Network, gives free comprehensive treatment through volunteer dentists to people who are 65 or older, permanently disabled or need medically necessary care, and who can't pay. You must use up any dental insurance or Medicaid benefits first, you can use the program only once, and the waitlist can run from several months to a year or more.
Partly open in Indiana. Not accepting 17 listed counties (incl. Clark, Floyd, Monroe, Vanderburgh, Wayne). That's from the application form on October 26, 2026, and it changes often. Apply online at Dental Lifeline Network.

Seniors and veterans in Indiana
Medicare leaves most routine dental care out: in most cases no cleanings, fillings, extractions or dentures (Medicare.gov). KFF found that 98% of individual Medicare Advantage plans offer some dental coverage in 2026, but some cover only preventive care and many cap what they pay each year. People 55 and older who qualify for PACE get dentistry as part of the program. In Indiana, seniors who also have Medicaid get the adult benefit (extensive).
For veterans, free VA dental care depends on your eligibility class; the widest coverage goes to former POWs and veterans with a compensated service-connected dental condition or a 100% service-connected rating. Others can buy insurance through VADIP.
VA dental care lists every eligibility class.
